Civil marriage ceremonies

The Registration Service carries out civil marriage ceremonies within North Somerset.

You could choose a Register Office Ceremony or get married at one of the  approved premises for weddings across the district. If you choose an approved premises,  you must also ensure that the Registrar can attend at the time you require.

Details of the ceremony options are available from the Registration Service with  fees payable.

The ceremony must take place between 8am and 6pm on any day of the week. However, we will not normally conduct a ceremony after 5pm.

Notice of Marriage must first be given by each partner via an appointment at the Register Office of the district in which they live. These details will be confirmed by the Registrar immediately prior to the marriage ceremony.

If either or both of the parties do not hold either British or European Economic Area (EEA) citizenship they may need Home Office approval before giving notice to a designated Register Office.

On the day of the wedding you will need to bring along at least two other people as witnesses to the marriage and to sign the marriage register.

More than two witnesses can sign the register but a Registrar will advise you.

Witnesses should be capable of understanding the meaning of the ceremony before being asked to sign the register.

Ceremonies must be conducted in English. Parties who do not speak or understand English sufficiently will require an interpreter.
