If you wish to get married you can have a civil or
religious ceremony in North Somerset.
Civil Marriage Ceremonies can take place at the Register
Office in Weston-super-Mare or other
approved premises for weddings. You do not have to live
in the district in which your Civil Marriage Ceremony takes
place.
Religious Marriage Ceremonies can take place in a church or
registered building.
For marriage in the Church of England at least one party to the
marriage must have a suitable connection to the particular church,
or live within its parish. The vicar will be able to advise
you.
For marriage in a Non-conformist Church (i.e. in a registered
building)usually at least one party to the marriage must live in
the district where the marriage is to take place. The rules
relating to this are complex however and the Superintendent
Registrar will be able to advise you.
Before most marriages you must give
formal
Notice of Marriage via an appointment at your
local Register Office. This may not be necessary if you
propose to marry in the Church of England.
You can find your nearest Church of England by seaching the
Church of England
database. Churches of other denominations are included in our
list of
religious premises licensed for marriages
list.
Fees are payable for giving
Notice of Marriage and for the attendance of a Registrar at a
ceremony where required.
