Civil partnerships

Our Registration Service carries out civil partnership ceremonies for same sex couples.

Civil Partnership registration ceremonies can take place at the Register Office or other approved premises across the district.

Before a Civil Partnership can be registered  Notice of Civil Partnership must be given by each partner in the district in which they live. To give Notice of Marriage in North Somerset please make an appointment at your local Register Office. You will have to pay a  fee. Notice must be given at least 16 days before the partnership can be registered.

Each partner must be over 16 years of age, single, widowed or divorced and have had any previous civil partnerships dissolved.

If either partner is under 18 years of age the written consent of parents or legal guardians is usually required.

If either or both of the parties do not hold either British or European Economic Area (EEA) citizenship they may need Home Office approval before giving notice to a designated Register Office.

The partnership is made legal by the signing of a schedule in front of a Civil Partnership Registrar and two witnesses.

There are no legal requirements to have a ceremony, exchange rings or vows - although many people choose to do so.

Find out more about venues in the area licensed to hold civil partnership ceremonies in our approved premises section.

Details of the ceremony options are available from the Register Office.
