Our Registration Service deals with the
re-registration of births within North
Somerset.
Re-registration is required where a father's details were
not included at first registration or the natural parents have
married each other since a birth was first registered.
In these cases, it is important that births are re-registered as
failure to do so could have implications for the child in later
life, for example in matters of legitimacy and
inheritance.
There is no time limit on when re-registration takes place but
it should be done as soon as possible following a change of
circumstances.
Where the person whose birth is being re-registered is aged 16
or over and their name is being changed at re-registration their
written consent is required.
A short form needs to be completed and signed by the parents
before re-registration. For a form please contact our
Registration
Service.
The re-registration needs to be made at the Register
Office in the district where the child was born.
If a child was born outside North Somerset our Registration
Service can take re-registration information and pass it on to the
district where the child was born. This is called re-registration
by declaration.
Most re-registrations can be authorised locally but occasionally
the consent of the Registrar General is required. Our Registration
Service will let you know if this is needed.
Our Registration Service can also provide
certificates for re-registered events.
