Major emergencies

In the event of a major incident occurring within North Somerset the emergency services would be the first to respond.

During an emergency situation a multi-agency control would be set up to co-ordinate the response and the police would issue vital information via the media.

We would assist the emergency response by providing emergency shelter, food and other essential services to the community.

One of the ways we would do this is by co-ordinating our response with other local authorities and the voluntary sector.

We would also mobilise staff to carry out tasks depending on the scale and type of incident including:

  • Setting up emergency control centres to co-ordinate our response
  • Setting up rest centres to provide shelter, food and information
  • Setting up temporary mortuaries to deal with mass fatalities
  • Assisting the police in the evacuation of the incident site and surrounding areas
  • Providing information to the public and the media
  • Clearing blocked roads
  • Assisting in clearing the area affected by the incident

However, we would aim to keep our everyday services running despite these diversions.

Once the emergency phase is over the emergency services would hand over the recovery and clean-up operation to us to help the community recover and return to normal life.
