Emergency advice

The safest thing to do in a major emergency is to follow the instructions of the emergency services.

If in doubt, go in, stay in and tune in to your local TV and radio stations.

You can download a copy of our 'Major Emergencies' booklet which provides practical ideas and advice for coping with an emergency event.

UK households received a booklet in 2004 on Preparing for Emergencies - What You Need to Know. It provides practical advice on:

  • How to prepare for an emergency
  • What to do in an emergency
  • Coping with specific emergencies
  • Basic first aid
  • How you can prevent a terrorist attack

A register of key risks in Avon and Somerset is also available from the police.

Flooding

We work with the Environment Agency to plan for and respond to flooding.

The agency provides flood warnings for England and Wales and advice on how you can help yourself if you are at risk.

To hear the latest flood warnings call Floodline on 0845 9881188.

Travelling in winter

The Highways Agency is a useful source of information when planning a journey in bad weather conditions.

You should only travel in severe snow or ice if your journey is essential and make sure you are fully prepared for all events and conditions.

Check the weather forecast and road conditions for the journey you are about to take and always inform someone of your route, destination and estimated time of arrival.

You should always carry a shovel in the boot of your car in case you become trapped and include a warm blanket in case you get stranded.

Chemical or radiological incidents

In the event of any chemical or radiological incident stay indoors until you are advised to leave by the emergency services.

You should also close your doors and windows, block obvious vents and turn off air conditioning and ventilation units.

Tune into local radio and television and listen for local announcements and if your children are at school do not collect them as they will be taken care of there.

Prepare an overnight bag as you may need to evacuate.

The  Severnside Sirens sound warnings to areas potentially at risk from incidents at chemical sites in and around Avonmouth.

The Security Service (MI5) has more information on chemical and radiological incidents.

Health

There are many sources of health risk and the Department of Health and DEFRA have information on all kinds of public health risks including avian and pandemic flu outbreaks.
