National Appenticeship Week

Are you a local business? Would you like to help someone reach their full potential while giving your business productivity a boost?

If you are, you should consider hiring an apprentice.  Despite the current economic challenges we are facing, research shows that 80% of business employing apprentices agree that they make the workplace more productive.

With our partners Agilisys and Liberata, Weston College and the National Apprenticeship Service, we're hosting an event (pdf, Dec 11, 55KB) to help local businesses learn more about the benefits of employing an apprentice, and meet apprentices who work in the area already. There will be guest speakers including Manoj Badale, a technology entrepreneur, co-founder of Agilisys and co-founder of cricket’s Indian Premier League, and local MP John Penrose.

Since 2007 we have employed 33 apprentices who make a significant contribution to their teams and our organisation. Some of our support services were outsourced to Agilisys and Liberata in October 2010 and they have committed to employing 100 apprentices over the ten years of their contract. There are currently over 20 apprentices working in a variety of teams across the partnership. We currently offer four types of apprenticeships:

  • business administration
  • association of accounting technicians (AAT)
  • customer service
  • information technology

Our apprentices are employed on fixed term contracts ranging from one to three years, depending on the qualification they are studying. We don't guarantee them employment at the end of their contracts but we operate a succession planning scheme which has been extremely successful over the last year, with eight out of nine apprentices securing permanent roles in the partnership.

'We are proud to be able to offer apprentices the opportunity to work in our organisation, and appreciate the energy and professionalism that they show, they are a credit to the council.  The apprenticeship scheme is good for young people, good for the council and good for the community.'
