Smoking law

It is illegal to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England and our Food and Safety team enforces this law.

Under the regulations those responsible or in charge of areas  where the law applies could be fined up to £2,500 if they let people smoke.

They face fines of up to £200 if they do not display the correct no-smoking signage at entrances to smokefree areas.

And smokers may also get an on-the-spot fine of up to £50 if they light up where they are not allowed.

It is advised that business leaders introduce a smoking policy to make it clear where smoking is and is not allowed and what will happen to those who break the law.

We also have advice on  approaching a smoker for those who deal with the public and do not know how to ask someone to stop smoking.

You can contact the Primary Care Trust's  Support to Stop Service for help and advice for anyone who wants to quit.
